Olvera Street

Olvera Street is known as the birthplace of Los Angeles, a historic place where people come to experience Latin culture, food, and traditions. However, beyond being a tourist destination, Olvera Street is still home to merchants and community members who work every day to keep this place alive. This project focuses on the people behind the streets, the ones who continue to preserve the history, culture, and identity of a place that is facing many challenges to survive. When I first started this project, my goal was to reconnect with my Latin culture. I originally thought that meant looking beyond Los Angeles and reconnecting with the places where my culture comes from. But as I spent more time at Olvera Street, talking with merchants and community members, I realized there was a story right in front of me. I became more interested in sharing the voices of the people who have dedicated their lives to keeping this community alive. Through these conversations, I saw that Olvera Street is more than just a place people visit; it is a community with real people, real struggles, and a history that deserves to be recognized. My approach was based on spending time, listening, and building connections with the people I photographed. I wanted the images to feel honest and show the relationship between the merchants, the environment, and the history surrounding them. Through black and white photography, I focused on creating a sense of nostalgia and memory, especially for those who may have visited Olvera Street as children with their families. I wanted the photographs to capture that feeling of returning to a place you remember, while also showing the reality of the people who continue to exist there today. This project is also about bringing awareness to a place that many young Angelenos have never experienced or even know about, despite its importance to the city’s history. Throughout this process, I realized that preserving Olvera Street is not only about preserving buildings or traditions, but about recognizing the people who give this place its meaning. I hope this work encourages viewers to look beyond the surface and understand that Olvera Street is not just a tourist attraction; it is a living community that continues to fight to survive.
